As in most modern cases of disease discovery, emphasis is generally placed on defining medical outcomes before identifying risk factors that increase the vulnerability of persons to the disease. However, this evolution of medical knowledge has not been the pattern in the field of refugee mental health. Over the past two decades, the greatest emphasis has been on describing the type and nature of violent events experienced by refugee survivors. Other risk factors described in Fig 1, such as personality and environmental characteristics, have been poorly researched.
