Radiofrequency coil

The function of the radiofrequency coil is twofold—to transmit the radiofrequency pulses of the imaging sequences and to receive the emitted output signal. Head coils used for neuroimaging fit snugly over the subject's head, and are often of a three-dimensional bird-cage design with good sensitivity throughout the volume they enclose. Surface coil designs are used to image small regions with high spatial resolution, and phased-array coils combine several surface coils for more extensive coverage.
