Psychotherapy

Therapeutic work, undertaken when children are already symptomatic, will be dependent on careful clinical assessment. Individual psychodynamic therapy with bereaved children has been described by Furman,(1..8) and family therapy with bereaved families by Black.(33) Structured therapeutic groups for bereaved children aged from 7 to 11 years have been found to reduce symptomatology compared with waiting-list controls(34) within the first year post-bereavement. A bereavement service running residential camps for bereaved children was set up in 1992 and appears to meet a need. Detailed evaluation has not yet been published. (35) Treatments for traumatically bereaved children are summarized by Black.(36)
