The providers of medical care often refer patients unprepared and at a late stage of the medical treatment. Requests are often not clearly formulated. Issues such as burnout or problems in the doctor-patient relationship or between staff members may be the underlying reasons for referral. At the start of every consultation the psychiatrist needs to assess and clarify the questions, both implicit and explicit, asked by the referring physician. Indirect means of caring for the patient by influencing the medical team through education, training, supervision, and serving as a role model are important.
