To Morris's seven uses of epidemiology should be added prevention, which Ernest Gruenberg ^l1 said was its 'ultimate service'. All other uses are subsidiary to this. Examples are the current activity in the prevention of suicide in young persons and of alcohol or drug abuse. In these, the traditional medical approach of targeting high-risk groups should be contrasted with the epidemiological and population-based approach described by Rose.
