Prevention and treatment

The prevention of accidents is beyond the scope of this chapter. The negative consequences may be reduced by teaching coping skills. (1)

Tertiary prevention aims at reducing disability, health problems, and behavioural problems. Because the injury per se is crucial for the long-term outcome, it is not surprising that brief psychological interventions provided for all injured people have not improved the long-term outcome. Instead, preventive measures should be limited to those exhibiting deviant behaviour or accident-related psychiatric disorders during the first few weeks after the accident, or subjects with the most severe injuries (ISS > 15) or burns requiring a long period of hospitalization.
