By definition enuresis does not exist until 5 years of age. Although about 10 per cent of school-aged children (5 to 16 years) wet their beds mostly every night of the week, prevalence declines with age. The spontaneous remission rate is 16 per cent per year (ages 5 to 19), with 3 per cent of children continuing to bedwet into adulthood.(26) There is a strong gender component with more than twice as many males as females. Approximately 85 per cent of all cases have primary enuresis.

Encopresis affects between 1 and 7.5 per cent of the general paediatric population. It is four to five times more common in males and decreases with age; approximately 30 per cent are also enuretic.(25)
