Overall prevalence

Psychiatric disorder appears to be more common among the mentally retarded than in the non-retarded population. Overall prevalence rates range from 20 per cent to 74 per cent(l. ^Ml) depending upon the diagnostic criteria employed, the type of disorder screened (whether or not behaviour disorders are included, for example), the nature of the sample (community or institution), the type of data collected (case note studies or new data), and the level of mental retardation, ages, and gender of the populations studied. Higher rates of psychiatric disorder have been reported among the severely mentally retarded in comparison with the mildly retarded in some studies.
