Mood disorders Table3

The number of published pathoanatomical studies in schizophrenia contrasts sharply with the scant number of neuropathological examinations in affective disorders.

In reviewing the world literature of the last 60 years, Jeste et al.(42) found 15 neuropathological studies on affective disorders. Seven of them were published between 1949 and 1969, had fewer than four cases, and utilized qualitative tissue evaluation. Using Medline Research between 1970 and 1999 we found 11 morphometric postmortem studies, where patients with affective disorders were included (T.able.3). However, they were usually included as control cases searching for abnormalities in schizophrenic brains.
