Milieu therapy

The term milieu therapy has been used to describe an environment which is in some way therapeutic. The therapeutic component may be supportive, or it may be challenging. It is often difficult to define exactly what is the 'milieu' component of the therapy. People kept in a hospital cannot offend outside, but this is not a success for the hospital environment. Prisons do the same, without any pretence at therapy. It is suggested that this term is now outmoded and, whenever it is being considered, should be replaced by an attempt to describe a specific intervention.
