Methodology of PET and SPET2

In brief, PET and SPET comprise the following.

1. The production and incorporation of a gamma-emitting radio-isotope into a molecule of biological interest to form a radiotracer administered to humans ( Pla,t,e 3).

2. Imaging of the distribution of the radiotracer, over minutes or hours, in living human brain. PET or SPET cameras are used to detect the emitted gamma radiation from the decaying radio-isotope ( Plate. ...4).

3. Quantification of a physiological parameter of interest, such as total number of receptors ( Bmax) or regional cerebral blood flow, from the measurement of radio-activity in the brain over time (Plate.5 and Plate 6).
