Measurement of other variables

The concerns about having psychometrically sound measures of disorder also apply to other variables such as correlates of disorder. Measurement error in correlates, similar to measurement error in disorder, will distort the strength of relationship between the two. Another issue in the correlate domain is the necessity of differentiating among the subcategories of correlates listed in Fig 3.(24) In prevention initiatives, markers will indicate populations and risk, and causal risk factors should be the focus of intervention efforts. Knowledge about the mechanisms by which causal risk factors have their effect indicates specific elements in the prevention initiative.
