Levels of Care

Recovery Maintenance and Health Management: Minimal support; infrequent contact. Outpatient: Minimal support; regular appointments.

Intensive Outpatient: Independent living; some support services; frequent clinical contacts.

Intensively managed non-residential: Intensive management by multidisciplinary community team

Non-secure Residential: Residential non-hospital setting.

Secure Residential: Hospital inpatient

The American Society of Addiction Medicine has developed Patient Placement Criteria ( PPC-2), which also use assessments on six scales to determine the need for a given level of care for an individual with a substance-use disorder. (22)
