Infectious mononucleosis

The Epstein-Barr virus causes 90 per cent of all cases of infectious mononucleosis. It can appear at any age, but the illness tends to manifest itself clinically in adolescents and young adults. The incubation period is from 21 to 49 days. Affected individuals may be intermittent carriers of the virus for several years.

The most important symptoms are fever, general malaise, diffuse lymphadenopathies, and laryngitis. However, complications can lead to encephalitis and paralysis of the cranial nerves. In the case of encephalitic compromise, delirium can result. Depressive syndromes have also been observed after an acute infectious episode, accompanied by fatigue.
