It could be valuable to be able to predict which individuals are particularly likely to experience negative psychological reactions, because if this could happen at an early stage, vulnerable individuals could be given some kind of intervention to help minimize distress. There have been relatively few studies which have examined whether it is possible to predict psychological reactions to risk-factor testing using pretest psychological variables. Of these studies, a common finding is that people who were more distressed before screening are more likely be more distressed afterwards. (48> Similarly, people's pre-existing risk perceptions tend to predict their post-screening perceptions. (33)
