Hospital admission

This is sometimes required to stabilize the crisis situation and to provide time for diagnostic evaluation. Hospital admission is useful if the patient's condition is deteriorating rapidly, or failing to improve despite adequate outpatient treatment, or intensive observation and evaluation is required.

Inpatient and outpatient management should be integrated. A discharge plan should be worked out as soon as possible in collaboration with the outpatient staff, the family, the young person, and any community agencies involved in the management. Once the crisis situation is stabilized, the management plan should be reviewed. The young person may be better managed in a less restrictive environment.(7)
