A number of surveys have been conducted to estimate the prevalence of attempted suicide. Most of these surveys concerned adolescents and were administered anonymously. Most questionnaire studies revealed that between 1 and 4 per cent of respondents had attempted suicide at some point in time, (29,39 but some studies even reported 20 per cent. (31> However, the validity of some of these findings is questionable; the prevalence of lifetime attempted suicide among non-respondents is not known, the influence of social desirability is not known, and the wording of the questions is rather important.
