Future directions

Child psychiatric epidemiology must take into account both the development of the child and the development of disorders over time. (60> Risk and protective factors and the mechanisms by which they have their effect may vary at different developmental periods. What is needed are longitudinal studies that provide data on the natural history of child psychopathology, and establish developmental sequences and pathways. (61..) This will aid the prevention initiative immeasurably by indicating who should receive intervention initiatives, and when and what their focus should be. This would help to realize the major aim of child psychiatric epidemiology, namely the prevention of disorders in populations of children.
