In one study, monozygotic twins had a 66 per cent concordance of nail-biting compared with 34 per cent in dizygotic twins. (49 In another, of 112 family members of 25 subjects entering a medication trial for onychophagia, seven (6 per cent) had severe nail-damaging behaviour, four (4 per cent) were severe nail-biters, and three (3 per cent) picked or chewed their hands or feet.(39) Two (2 per cent) members had probable obsessive-compulsive disorder, two (2 per cent) had eating disorders, one (1 per cent) had compulsive gambling, two (2 per cent) had probable mood disorder, and two (2 per cent) received psychiatric hospital admissions for unknown reasons.
