Epidemiology

BDD appears to be fairly common. Although adequate epidemiological studies have not been done, one small study performed in Florence, Italy, reported a 1-year prevalence of 0.77. In clinical samples, BDD has been found in 12 per cent of dermatology patients and 7 to 15 per cent of cosmetic surgery patients. Reported rates of BDD are 8 to 37 per cent in patients with obsessive-compulsive disorder, 11 to 12 per cent in social phobia, 26 per cent in trichotillomania, zero to 8 per cent in major depression, and 14 to 42 per cent in atypical major depression.(4)
