In the general population, the prevalence of pain disorder, and other mental disorders presenting with pain, is uncertain because large-scale surveys of mental disorders do not include an assessment of pain or of related physical conditions. Somatoform disorders generally appear to be rather more common in people with chronic pain than in people without pain. Prevalence varies considerably in clinical samples, depending on selection criteria, but somatoform disorders have been reported in 12 to 52 per cent of patients.(3)
