Disciplines and staffing of a consultationliaison service

The size and composition of the CL team needs to be defined depending on the size of the hospital and the target group of patients. Larger university hospitals should have teams with, on average, five to six full-time equivalents of clinical staff and a secretary, and should include both nurses and psychologists. Non-university hospitals usually have three to four full-time equivalents. In The Netherlands, the rule of thumb is 150 consultations per year and a small outpatient population by each consultant working in a university setting with additional teaching and research responsibilities, and about 300 consultations per year for non-university hospitals. Therefore the necessary staffing levels can be estimated from the number of admissions and the rate of consultation.
