Differential diagnosis

Tourette syndrome is a clinical diagnosis and is part of the spectrum that includes transient childhood tic disorders. The main differential diagnosis is with dystonia, secondary tic disorders (i.e. following trauma, encephalitis, rheumatic fever, stroke, metabolic and toxic encephalopathies) and inherited degenerative conditions such as Huntington's disease and neuroacanthocytosis. Tics induced or exacerbated by drugs (amphetamines, typical and atypical neuroleptics, tricyclic antidepressants, antihistamines, and carbamazepine) also need to be considered.(22)
