Diagnostic criteria of gender identity disorder as enumerated in DSM-IV (1.9 include a stated desire to be the other sex, a desire to live and be treated as the other sex, or the conviction that he or she has the typical feelings and reactions of the other sex. In adults the disturbance is manifested by symptoms such as the preoccupation of getting rid of primary and secondary sexual characteristics and the request for hormone surgery or procedures to alter physically the sexual characteristics to simulate the other sex. ICD-10 also notes that the transsexual identity should be present persistently for at least 2 years and not be a symptom of another mental disorder such as schizophrenia/1,,1 Both sets of diagnostic criteria note that the condition is not associated with chromosomal abnormality or a physically intersexed condition.
