The implications of the lack of specific policies for older people with mental retardation are particularly relevant to those from black and ethnic minority groups. Their needs may not be appropriately met by existing day services, but the alternative, that is living in residential homes in which staff and residents do not share the same background or language, may result in increased isolation in old age. Appropriate community services, which respond to different cultural preferences and expectations, have been developed in some areas of the United Kingdom. (22ยป In general, however, service providers tend to focus on the issues of age and mental retardation, rather than the cultural background of those individuals who have different expectations and preferences in the context of age and approaching death.
