Conclusions

Interest in the psychopharmacological treatment of children and adolescents with major psychiatric disorder has increased sharply over the last several years. While still in its infancy, child and adolescent psychopharmacology is now accepted as an important branch of general child and adolescent psychiatry, and one without which the discipline could not survive into the next century. Nevertheless, for many reasons, the medication of children and adolescents remains a controversial issue. It will remain important to discuss openly the benefits and hazards of drug treatments generally, and particularly those that target symptoms or disorders suffered by very young people.
