Conclusion

Although there have been several controlled trials involving psychotropic drugs and placebo in the treatment of personality disorder, none of them satisfy the full requirements for establishment of efficacy set out at the beginning of this chapter. This does not mean that drugs are ineffective in personality disorder, but there is no satisfactory evidence that would allow specific recommendations to be made. Since most patients receiving drug treatment have a mental state disorder independent of their personality status, further studies, such as those of Ansseau et al.,(55> in which patients with mental state disorders being treated with drugs also have their personality status assessed would be helpful in elucidating the role of personality in treatment response.
