Complications

There is little information concerning medical complications of hypochondriasis. Because some persons with the disorder have more medical contact, they might be expected to benefit from the added attention. However, medical illness is often neglected in persons with psychiatric disorders, and iatrogenic complications have been documented in patients with hypochondriasis. Also, the invalidism of chronic hypochondriasis may lead to neglect of exercise and diet.

Little is known about possible psychiatric complications. Certainly depressive and anxiety disorders may develop in some patients. With respect to suicide, hypochondriasis has been variously viewed as protecting against and increasing its risk.
