Community diagnosis

Here one obtains estimates of morbidity as it occurs at the general population level, not just in persons who have reached primary care or mental health services. Examples are the National Comorbidity Study in the United States,(5) the Survey of Psychiatric Morbidity in the United Kingdom,(6) and the National Survey of Mental Health and Wellbeing in Australia.(7) Only by having such estimates of prevalence or incidence for whole populations can the size of their disease burden be determined. This is because community-based measures of morbidity include not only persons with treated conditions but also those who are symptomatic yet have not reached services.
