The psychiatrist needs also to think about where to keep notes and copies of letters, including their physical security and access to them, and to clarify to whom they belong: to the doctor, the health authority, or the school? There is also the question of to whom to write, when several different people, and for different reasons, have an interest in the young person's case and progress. Matters which may have a significant bearing on the case may need to be known about by all those involved, and are not always easy to set down in writing; however, it can be a useful therapeutic exercise, for example when a single letter is used to summarize and confirm what has been agreed by all concerned about an aspect of behaviour.
