These disorders have both psychological and somatic symptoms, and are associated with particular disturbances in behaviour. In elderly people, these symptoms and behaviours are similar to those seen in younger patients, but there are some important differences in how they manifest themselves or are perceived by others. Although most neurotic disorders in elderly patients are of long standing, an important minority of cases have their onset in old age, and it is these that usually cause the greatest diagnostic difficulties.
