A consistent finding in biological psychiatric research has been abnormalities in serotonergic function in people with impulsive aggression, including those with intermittent explosive disorder. For example, mean platelet [3H] 5-hydroxytryptamine (serotinin) uptake was significantly lower in 15 male outpatients with episodic aggression than in 15 non-aggressive comparison subjects. (1!.> Similarly, in a study of 58 violent offenders and impulsive fire-setters, 33 (57 per cent) of whom had DSM-III intermittent explosive disorder, lower cerebrospinal fluid concentrations of 5-hydroxyindoleacetic acid were found in the impulsive offenders and fire-setters than in the non-impulsive offenders and normal control subjects.(8)
