Biological studies

There are no studies of the biology of compulsive buying. Treatment response

Isolated reports of psychoanalytic and insight-oriented psychotherapy in compulsive buying have mostly been unsuccessful. (24) There is one report, however, of two patients with compulsive buying who each responded to behaviour therapy (cue exposure plus response prevention) after failing clomipramine treatment. (26)

Antidepressant and mood-stabilizing medications may be effective in compulsive buying, including serotonin reuptake inhibitors, tricyclics, bupropion, lithium, and valproate/24.) For example, in a 9-week, open-label trial of fluvoxamine (up to 300 mg/day), nine of 10 compulsive shoppers were described as improved, in that they were less preoccupied with shopping, spent less time shopping, and spent less money.(27) There is also one report of two patients with compulsive buying who responded to high doses of the opioid antagonist naltrexone (100 mg/day).
