Assessment of function

Clinical assessment of function can be performed by informant history and by direct observation. The occupational therapist fulfils an invaluable role in establishing the detailed functional ability of those with AD, in addition to implementing changes in the home designed to maximize function. The FAST scale is based on the premise that the pattern of decline in function is relatively uniform in AD, and hence establishes a staging of severity on function rather than cognition. As in most instances functional severity is of more relevance for the provision of services, there is much to recommend such an approach.
