Anger and guilt

Guilt and self-blame are common early emotional reactions to receiving a positive HIV test result(22) and the person may also feel guilty about the possibility of infecting others. People who have tested positive for a genetic disorder often feel guilty about the possibility of passing the gene on to their children. (23 The phenomenon of 'survivors guilt' has also been noted in people who receive low-risk results for a genetic disorder, who feel distressed if their relatives test positive. Anger is less researched than other emotions after health screening although clinically it is a widely described reaction to diagnosis of a serious illness. It is also reported after a high-risk genetic test result for Huntington's disease (24) and breast/ovarian cancer/2.5)
