According to one robust opinion, it is essential to pursue the search for a specific and necessary cause of anorexia nervosa because the currently popular
'multifactorial' approach has little explanatory power.(31.) Accordingly the failure to identify a necessary causal element is regrettable. Many of the factors within a wide range of psychological, social, and physical causes so far studied may therefore only be relevant in predisposing to anorexia nervosa. The patients 'become terribly afflicted victims of an often-incurable illness whose causes still elude clarification'. (3!)
