at the post-larval stage of development in S. aurata. Specifically, the appearance of rhythmic melatonin release in response to an LD cycle indicates the development of photosensitivity, whereas rhythmicity under DD suggests the presence of a functional pineal clock. The presence of rhythmic melatonin release from pineals of different Sparidae species under LD and DD supports the notion that a pineal clock occurs at the family level of taxonomic organization. The significant difference of melatonin concentrations between the L and D periods, during the first LD cycle, suggests the existence of inter-species variations in the melatonin-generating system within the Sparidae family. The melatonin-generating system of the gilthead seabream, Sparus aurata, is fully functional at the post-larva stage. Further characterization of the melatonin-generating systems of these two sparids is in progress.
