Clinical Assessment of the Newborn, Infant and Older Child

While the adult neurological examination can be applied to young children and adolescents, the evaluation of a newborn or infant must be tailored to the specific developmental stage of the patient. A quick assessment of an infant's acquisition of developmental milestones provides critical insight into that child's motor and cognitive functions (Tables 1 and 2). For premature infants, developmental progress is accompanied by the acquisition of basic motor postures and responses that should be documented as part of the routine physical examination.
