Treatment of the Dysmetabolic Syndrome

The American Heart Association, working with the National Institutes of Health National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute and the American Diabetes Association, has provided a series of recommendations for the treatment of the dysmetabolic syndrome [10]. These recommendations include medications for managing the dyslipidemias, hypertension, and impaired glucose tolerance. However, the primary treatment for the dysmetabolic syndrome is lifestyle modification, focusing on diet and physical activity. In particular, modest weight losses significantly improve all aspects of the syndrome. Effective lifestyle changes also will aid in its prevention.
