It is generally agreed by all scientific organizations that routine supplementation of the diet with antioxidants and vitamins is not necessary. The DNSG of the EASD recommends that the consumption of foods naturally rich in dietary antioxidants (tocopherols, carotenoids, vitamin C, flavonoids, polyphenols, phytic acid), trace elements and other vitamins should be encouraged. The daily consumption of a range of vegetables and fruit is encouraged as well as regular consumption of wholegrain breads, cereal and oily fish. Salt intake is advised to be limited to <6 g/day.
