Febrile episodes should be managed according to the severity of the neutropenia (see table) and the underlying cause (bone marrow failure is associated with more life-threatening infections). Broad spectrum IV antibiotics may be required and empirical systemic antifungal therapy may be required in those who fail to respond to antibiotics. Prophylactic antibiotic and antifungal therapy may be helpful in some patients with chronic neutropenia as may G-CSF. Antiseptic mouthwash is of value and regular dental care is important.
