Ataxia telangiectasia

A recessive disorder with increased chromosome fragility and a single gene defect on chromosome 11q22-23. This affects several systems. The first is neuromotor development with cerebellar ataxia appearing around 18 months of age and progressing to include dysarthria associated with degeneration of the Purkinje cells. Telangiectases appear between 2 and 8 years of age affecting the eyes, face and ears. An immune deficiency is evident affecting both humoral and cellular immunity, though less severe than SCID. Affected children get:

• Sinopulmonary infections.

• Progressive failure of antibody production.

• Hypogammaglobulinaemia.

• Increased incidence of lymphoid malignancies.
