Anaemia in pregnancy

Physiological changes in red cell and plasma volume occur during pregrancy. 34 • Red cell mass 4 by <30%.

• Net effect to 4 blood volume by <50% with lowering of the normal Hb concentration to 10.0—11.0g/dL during pregnancy. MCV increases during pregnancy.

• Iron deficiency is a common problem and cause of anaemia in pregnancy.
