Systemic Diseases Affecting the Larynx

Sarcoidosis

• Laryngeal SSx: supraglottic submucosal mass (epiglottis most common), dysphonia, globus sensation, dyspnea

• Rx: endoscopic removal for symptomatic lesions (hoarseness or airway obstruction), may consider corticosteroids for significant exacerbations

Wegener's Granulomatosis

• most commonly involves the subglottis

• Laryngeal SSx: subglottic mass, dyspnea, biphasic stridor

• Rx: endoscopic removal for symptomatic lesions, medical management

Amyloidosis

• Laryngeal SSx: anterior subglottic mass (polypoidal covered with smooth mucosa)

• Rx: endoscopic removal for symptomatic lesions (hoarseness or airway obstruction)

Arthritis of Cricoarytenoid Joint

• cricoarytenoid joint mostly commonly affected

• Rheumatoid Arthritis most common etiology

• SSx: hoarseness, stridor, dysphagia, pain with swallowing

• Rx: corticosteroids, antireflux regimen
