And Tumour Like Conditions

Tumours of the eyelids are very similar to tumours occurring in the conjunctiva and the skin. The most important tumours of the eyelids are basal cell carcinomas, squamous cell carcinomas and sebaceous adenocarci-nomas. These tumours are discussed in Sect. 10.2.6. A tumour-like condition with a predilection for the eyelids and the surrounding skin is xanthelasma.

Xanthelasmata are yellow papules and plaques, most frequently occurring on the eyelids and the skin surrounding the eyes. They are relatively frequent. Xanthelas-mata can be a manifestation of hypercholesterolaemia, but most cases are idiopathic. Histology shows multiple foamy histiocytes in the superficial dermis (Fig. 10.29).

The most common inflammatory diseases of the orbit include Graves' disease (dysthyroid ophthalmopathy), orbital cellulitis and pseudotumours.
