The microarray technology offers the most rapid and practical tool to detect the presence or absence of a large set of virulence genes simultaneously within a given bacterial strain. Although microarray technology theoretically permits a genome-scale analysis for the presence of thousands of genes, only a few studies have reported using microarrays as a diagnostic tool (Table 22.1). The majority of published studies are of technical nature; only a few proof-of-concept application experiments have been published [46-49].
