Role of Growth Factors

Neurotrophins are expressed in hippocampus, including interneurons (182), and promote cell survival and differentiation (183). At least one neurotrophin, brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF), has been reported to have a putative ERE (184). Neurotrophin expression is regulated in hippocampus by excitatory amino acids released during physiological activity as well as after trauma (183,185-191). Although there have been studies of long-term estrogen regulation of neurotrophin expression in hippocampus and basal forebrain (192-194), no study has thus far considered the rapid estrogen modulation of neurotrophin expression.
