Hungarian Reedwolf

Unknown wild Dog of Central Europe.

Scientific names: Canis lupus minor, given by M. Mojsisovics in 1887; Canis aureus hungari-cus, renamed by Gyula fihik in 1938. Variant name: Rohrwolf (German). Physical description: Like a small wolf. Distribution: Hungary; eastern Austria. Present status: Apparently became extinct in the early twentieth century. Some museum specimens exist.

Possible explanations:

(1) A diminutive subspecies of Gray wolf (Canis lupus), first suggested by M. Mojsisovics and now the generally accepted identification.

(2) A large Golden jackal (Canis aureus), proposed by Janos Szunyoghy.
