Hydrogen peroxide is classified as generally recognized as safe (GRAS) for use in food products . It is used as a bleaching agent, oxidizing and reducing agent, and antimicrobial agent. The FDA specifies approved food uses of hydrogen peroxide such as treatment of milk used for cheese, preparation of modified whey, and production of thermophile-free starch. However, the FDA requires that the residual hydrogen peroxide be removed by physical or chemical means during processing. Hydrogen peroxide has not yet been approved by the FDA for washing fruits and vegetables.
