As a major safety issue is being evaluated, it is good practice to begin considering communication issues and to form a communications project team. This should minimise the amount of crisis management required. Ideally, professional and patient organisations will be informed prior to all relevant healthcare professionals. In turn relevant healthcare professionals will be informed prior to any media briefing. Although the media will inevitably hear about a major safety issue before all relevant healthcare professionals have been informed, timing the communications in this way will minimise the chances of major media coverage with no mechanism in place for getting communications to healthcare professionals.
